FAQ - Your questions answered on Forensic Transcription and on the Forensic Transcription Course

The Forensic Linguistics Institute, accredited by the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council in 2004, has just released an online forensic transcription course. The purpose of the course is to train linguists and other professionals, primarily in law enforcement and the legal profession, to transcribe audio and written/typewritten and paper versions of electronic texts, including mobile phone text messages. All course material is electronic and available as a single, compressed download.

The need for this course arose for two reasons. The Forensic Linguistics Institute, as a leading forensic linguistics laboratory, has often received badly transcribed texts in the past. It is evident that many linguistics students are not taught how to transcribe or the importance of accurate transcription. Secondly, there has been an increasing demand for transcription skills and the profession has been ill prepared for this need. It is not always the case that the busy forensic linguist will have time to transcribe texts, and as such needs a competent technician to undertake this task on his/her behalf.

The course rationale is that the forensic scribe is a very particular type of language technician, and as such needs training, experience and monitoring. The course, with 15 transcription assignments, graded by difficulty and type, and a written, invigilated examination, will ensure more than adequate training for the forensic scribe. At the end of the course a certificate is awarded. As the skill is relatively easy to assess, the certificate is one of competence as well as one of attendance. Three grades are awarded: Distinction, Merit and Pass. The cost of the course is £300.00, with further costs for examination fees. Those who pass the course may elect to undertake an annual refresher course to ensure continued competence training.
