Forensic Linguistics Micro CoursesNote: A second alternative way to gain the Certificate in Forensic Linguistics is to complete 3 'micro-courses' and one short course Unit 001: What is forensic linguistics? £30.00A micro-course introducing forensic linguistics with some examples from famous cases. For this course, you watch a video and you complete an assignment. Unit 002: Police Statements £30.00A micro-course detailing the most important features of some questioned police statements in the past. You get to look at some police statements and learn how to analyse them for signs of institutional language. We use genuine texts to do this, some from recent cases. You will need to do a short assignment. Unit 003: Suicide Notes £30.00A micro-course giving some insight into the main features of genuine and simulated suicide notes. In this course we study several suicide notes, both genuine and simulated, in order to learn how to distinguish the two types. There is a short assignment. Unit 004: The language of hoaxing £30.00A micro-course detailing an example of a very serious hoax from the 1970's, and listing some of the main features of hoax language. This is a good example of how to examine the linguistic features of simulated text, using text written by the Yorkshire Ripper Hoaxer as an example. There is a short assignment. Units 005, 006, 007 Introduction to voice recognition (not yet available)Three units introducing voice recognition. These units will not make you a 'forensic phonetician', but are designed to help you come to grips with the main issues in recognising voices, including voice types, articulation and co-articulation features. Unit 008 Introduction to audio enhancement (not yet available)This unit will introduce the main kinds of noise interference you will encounter in your recognition and transcription tasks and how to overcome them. It will show you how to use some freely available software. Note: you are welcome to take any of our courses simply for the experience. Or you can combine them into modules and take our certificate course as shown above. Advanced Certificate: If you complete the Certificate course, two short courses and two micro-courses you will be awarded the Advanced Forensic Linguistics Certificate.
